Picking a study method that suits your needs
Currently when it comes to the ISTQB foundation there are 3 available training structures available:
The main benefits of a quality third party training provider is that they will guide you from start to finish, including organising and sitting the exam at the end of the training course. A good training provider will teach you what’s need to pass the ISTQB Foundation certificate while also giving you relevant scenarios and industry experiences. There are also networking opportunities with fellow testers and to meet others in the industry. If all goes well in 3 days you have sat the ISTQB Foundation exam and waiting your results.
The downside to training in this method is that you need to, if employed take a full 3 days off work and the course can cost anywhere from $2,000 to $2,5000.
Online Training
With online training you a mixture of the third party training provider benefits and the self study benefits. With a good online training provider you will get interactive course content, exam quizzes and support usually via email or forum. You also get the choice to study at your own pace and can work around your current work hours. It is a lot cheaper then third party training providers costing from $900 to $1200.
The downside is you need self motivation to push yourself through the course along with booking your own exam.
Self Study
A lot like the online training method this is usually a book (or e-book) which focuses on what you need to pass the ISTQB foundation exam. Being the cheapest of the training methods, from $200-$400 these books usually come with mock exams and if lucky a support forum or email to help with questions. This method is great if you familiar with testing and need to focus on what is required to pass the test.
With the online training method you have an interactive delivery of course content to keep you enthralled thought the learning process while with the self study method you are reading text out of a book. Self motivation is the key to finishing the self study structure and again, you have to book your own exam.
Depending on your situation, factoring in budget, employer flexibility and your own previous study methods, choosing the right training structure will play an important factor in passing your ISTQB Foundation exam.

Five Tips for the ISTQB Foundation Exam
Below are 5 useful tips provided by Leanne Howard, Principal Consultant when sitting the ISTQB Foundaton exam
1. Format of the exam and the timings
There are 40 multiple choice questions to be completed in an hour, a minute per question with 20 minutes checking and review of your answers.
| Areas to revise | K1 | K2 | K3 |
| Fundamentals of Testing | 4 | 3 | |
| Testing throughout the software life cycle | 4 | 2 | |
| Static Techniques | 2 | 1 | |
| Test Design Techniques | 4 | 2 | 6 |
| Test Management | 3 | 3 | 2 |
| Tool Support for Testing | 3 | 1 |
The number of questions in each area should help you focus your revision and will be based on the ISTQB glossary. If it is easier try to relate the terms that you use in your work place to those in the glossary so that you can remember the related activities. There are lots of questions that will ask you to remember or recall a definition.
2. The Fundamental Test Process
As the name suggests the test process is the backbone of this course. Understand the five key areas and what activities take place under each.
- Test Planning and Control
- Test Analysis and Design
- Test Implementation and Execution
- Evaluating exit criteria and reporting
- Test Closure Activities
3. Learn the different models, levels and types of testing
The key models are Waterfall, V-model and iterative and an understanding of what they are and the advantages and disadvantages of each is required. The critical levels to revise and be able to state the different test activities performed in each are Component, Integration, Component Integration, System Integration, System and Acceptance testing. What is s test type and how does testing vary between these such as functional, non-functional, structural and regression.
4. Testing techniques
The best way to remember the testing techniques is to apply them in your own work environment. You will have plenty of opportunity to make practical use of the various techniques while studying. Set yourself targets to use each of the techniques at least once.
5. Dynamic and static testing
The difference between these needs to be understood and the various activities undertaken as part of this testing.
- Static testing – Testing of a component/system at specification/implementation level without execution
- Static test techniques can be a manual examination (reviews) or automated analysis (static analysis) of the code or other project documentation
- Dynamic testing – Involves the execution of the software
Question 4
Which of the following is not a part of Configuration Management?a. Controlled library access

Question 5
Though activities in the Fundamental test process may overlap or occur concurrently, identify the logical sequential process.(i) Test Implementation and Execution
(ii) Test Closure activities
(iii) Evaluating exit criteria and reporting
(iv) Test Planning and Control
(v) Test Analysis and Design
(K2)
a. iv – v – iii – ii – i
b. v – i – iii – ii – iv
c. iv – v – i – iii – ii
d. v – ii – iii – i – iv
Question 6
One of the differences between the Modified Condition Decision Coverage and the Condition Coverage is:a. The Condition Coverage ensures all paths through a module are executed whereas the Modified Condition Decision Coverage ensures each path in a decision can independently affect the outcome.
b. The Modified Condition Decision Coverage ensures all alternative paths are executed whereas the Condition Coverage ensure all main paths are executed.
c. The Condition Coverage ensures each condition takes all possible outcomes at lease once whereas the Modified Condition Decision Coverage requires both maximum and minimum values within each field.
d. The Modified Condition Decision Coverage relies on the tester’s skill and past experience whereas the Condition Coverage relies on the way in which the system moves from one condition to another.
